Fairytale of New York

In the Pogues' somewhat downbeat Christmas song, Fairtale of New York, there are three lines:

"I could have been someone
Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me"

These words have one degree of seperation from my original intent for this post. First, Kirsty MacColl, a singer on this song was tragically killed in December of 2000 while Scuba diving in Mexico. That wasn't the purpose of this entry though.

Ground zero from my flight earlier this weekTwice recently I've passed by the site of the Twin Towers. Once as you can see from the picture, flying into Laguardia airport in NY, the second time as I plodded down the West Side Highway towards the finish of the recent New York Half Marathon, when I wondered how many of the competitors noticed they were running by Ground Zero, and secondly, if any of them would ever consider the lost hopes, lost aspirations and lost lives of those who died, and especially those that continue to suffer?

So, as we approach the 5th anniversary of the World Trade Center disaster, rather than focus on who did what and why, rather than focus on the politics, the justification or anything negative.

On September 11th, think for a minute how you still can be someone, and how, no matter what you have or don't have, you still have your dreams. Rather than be morose or vengeful about 9/11, set some time aside in the next month to help someone else be someone, to achieve their dreams.

Is this a hint that you want me to buy your Zipps for you? :)
Actually Roger, as much ads I appreciate the offer, I'd be much more grateful if you skipped a couple of training sessions and gave up some time to help at a kids shelter or local school event...

Zipp Clydesdale 808 wheelset: $1895
Volunteering at a childrens charity: $0
Seeing kids enjoy themselves: Priceless
Ok how did you come up with the kids thing? either you have esp or your paying more attention to my journal than I thought!

I am going to look into doing something. But giving up training sessions is just crazy talk!
I dont read your journal especially much, but working with kids can be so rewarding. I;ve coached kids soccer twice, when things go wrong its not good, but when they go right its so rewarding.... so it works for both of you. You feel good for doing it, you help them with their dreams...
